Spectators and Heros

When someone is a spectator that means they are a viewers and observers but aren’t we all spectators. We all watch others, watch television and are interested in lives other than ourselves. On some hand I think we watch others and observe to find relations with our own lives. Just like in Rear window, Jefferies was confined to a chair and had his beautiful girlfriend come visit him ever so often and he would pay her no mind because he was to busy observing the neighbors. In some sort of light he was judging his neighbors from his observations and using them to find meaning in his own life.

After 9/11 we lived in a world of paranoia. We had no idea that this kind of destruction could occur here in the United States. We were all living in doubt wondering when the next attack will or will not happen. How could we be more prepared? Or should we live each day with insecurity and fear?  9/11 made us realize that maybe we are not observing what really is around us. We missed something. Now people are more apt to be over secure and think more negatively of what horrible things could happen. We should not live life in fear but we should become better speculators. It was almost like the terrorist were watching us through a rear window, like they were seeing us in a movie and we had no idea or we just didn’t watch them back.

On TV recently I heard on the news about this man who fell into the subway tracks due to a seizure. This complete stranger jumped onto the tracks and laid on top of the man in the middle of the tracks and the two men survived. This stranger risked his own life just to help this other man. This is definitely a heroic gesture and a life is saved due to this mans action. Good thing he was watching the man as this happened because a lot of spectators stated that they did not see the man fall into the tracks nor have a seizure.Being a spectator is essential to lives, we need to be aware of our surroundings and even more aware of our own lives.
