PART II: What do you like most about your newfound media literacy?

1. I like the fact that I am more aware of persuasive advertising and that each part of an advertisement or commercial is perfectly structured to influence and persuade consumers. The journal entries made me really look at my surrounding and look in depth at commercials and ads around me that I would never had thought twice of before.

2. I really liked how I am more experienced and have for knowledge of the adobe programs such as Illustrator and Flash. These programs really taught me a lot about digital design and how to manipulate our work to create something different. Also I liked Flash, even though it was a little difficult to understand, because I liked the movement of words and how we controlled when they appeared on the screen. Implementing sound within our haikus added a creative touch.

3. I really liked learning and comprehending media literacy through the movies shown in class. I liked learning about the Panopticism in regards to watching the Rear Window, because it was interesting to see how people perceive us when we are not watching. In Three Kings I liked how when they imagined the bullet wound you could see the digitized slow motion effects of how it would affect the insides of your body. I also really liked How to get ahead in advertising because it shows how an advertisers primarily goal is not to actually help a consumer, but to make them think that a certain product is essential and to make them addicted and loyal to a particular brand.

Glamour and How to get ahead in Advertising

As stated in the text, the state of being envied is what constitutes glamour. Glamour is central to advertsing becasue it ecentuates well known celebrities who seem to be happy, and perfect without any flaws. In the movie, “How to get ahead in Advertising” glamour is cultivated throgugh the main character and his boil. Bagley the main character of the movie has a nervous breakdown when trying to figure out a campaign for acne cream. Bagley and especially his boil are constantly thinking of ways to advertise. Glamour is cultivated in the movie when he creates a commercial about flawless skin and Barbara Simmons and when he is talking about falsified teeth. Also when Bagley explains how he has to sell a pimple cream that might not even really work. He wants to persuade people to buy this glamourous product but the product is not the best. A product can not be perfect because then consumers won’t buy the next upgrade. Everything has to do glamour, looks, how sex sells product and convinicing people they need a product.

This ad is for absolut vodka. This new series of ads when it comes to “an absolut world” is a  great campaigning idea. This ad shows a man pregnant and his wife drinking a cocktail- portraying the working wife. Basically this ad is illustrating in s somewhat perfect world, or in an absolut world this could ahppen. I thought his was a great ad, great visual and perfect tagline.

I found this ad on the internet from the 1980’s. I thought this ad was great; just a simple headline which matched perfectly to the picture displayed. The images shows a person with a race car glove and its clicking an old fashioned type mouse. The word drive is very clever since you can literally drive a car like you will test out the computer drive on the macintosh. I thought this advertisement was ahead of its time because it is directed to everyday people but computers were not as popular in everyday homes as they are today.
